Some Key Krav Maga Principles Include:
Krav Maga is a Hebrew word and literally means “Close Quarter Combat”. Krav Maga is a martial art system that was first developed in Israel in the early 1900’s by multiple talented Hebrew instructors, one of which was Imi Lichtenfeld. However, Krav Maga does not have a single “founder” or absolute official beginning. It is the product of the needs of the times and the efforts of many instructors over the years, each adding and modifying the system based on his skills and experience.
Krav Maga is designed for self-defense, combat and worst case scenarios. Amajor part of the training involves the ability to handle self-defense situations, both physically and mentally. With the establishment of the State of Israel, Krav Maga was adopted as the official fighting style of the the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Police Force. Krav Maga is now taught to all units of the Israel Defense Forces in varying amounts depending on the type of unit. As such, nearly everyone in Israel has some Krav Maga training. Due toits effectiveness men, women and children of all types of backgrounds from around the world practice Krav Maga.
Krav Maga consists of a wide variety of techniques sourced from various martial arts such as Boxing, Muay Thai Kick Boxing, Karate, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, BJJ and Wrestling. It is free flowing and uses all styles of blocks, punches, kicks, chokes, take-downs and submissions in order to neutralize attackers in the shortest amount of time possible.
Students learn to defend against all types of real world scenarios standing or on the ground. Training may include defense against individual and multiple attackers with the attackers being unarmed or armed with weapons like knives, guns, sticks, ropes, or regional weapons like pitchforks.
Unlike competitive martial arts, where limits are placed on the type of techniques used or the areas targeted, Krav Maga has no limitations. Groin shots, eyes, throat, face, are all fair game. Krav Maga uses techniques that are easy to learn, easy to remember and easy to apply in many situations. It uses simple movements that are instinctive and natural to the body. Krav Maga places emphasis on aggressiveness, sticking to the goal no matter what, even when it is hard, even when you feel you have nothing left. The goal is to neutralize the attacker and the specific technique does not matter.
